In 1983, I was pastoring a church in Michigan when Ron Thompson, one of our missionaries, spoke at our church. Ron had just moved to southern Utah to start a church in Cedar City. This would be the first Bible Church in Southern Utah. He asked our church to pray that two other Bible churches would start in Southern Utah in the next five years—one in Richfield and one in St. George. My wife, Joy, and I prayed for two years and began to feel that we might be the answer to our own prayers. In time we were certain God wanted us to start a Bible church in St. George. We began looking for a mission that would allow us to go to the field quickly, without full support and would allow us to work part time. We needed a mission that would allow us to not only start a church, but also remain there as pastor. We could not find such a mission. At that time, I approached my father, Pastor John Miles, who had spoken in the past about wanting to start a mission. I said; "I think now would be a good time to start that mission."
In 1985, our family moved to St. George, Utah, as TBM’s first missionaries. We saw the Lord bless, and in 1992 our church graduated from the mission. Twenty one years later, I am still pastoring Southland Bible Church. In 2003, I was asked to serve as a board member and have served on the Board of Tentmakers Bible Mission since that time. It has been a joy to see how God has used TBM to facilitate missionaries getting to the field all around the world.
